Earth Day Art Model/Currents

Thanks for your interest in this project! I am looking for performers to participate in a festival called “Earth Day Art Model.” It is a 24 hour telematic (virtual) festival that gives artists a space to celebrate the anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2021 (more info here). I submitted my work Currents and it was accepted this year. Currents is a product of my master’s thesis, where I researched how to turn weather/climate data into sound through a process known as sonification (more info here). Part of that work was creating wind/percussion solo pieces that each depicted one significant U.S. weather event from the last 40 years. I am looking to premiere these solo works at the festival, so now I need performers to make this happen!

If you are interested, here is what this commitment would entail for you:

  • Learn the solo piece and record your own audio/video performance of it. You will not be performing the piece live at the festival; it will be broadcast in this recorded video form. Sheet music/MIDI recordings are available for you to look at below.

  • I am not super picky about getting a professional recording, so I am fine with you using an iPhone and the best mic you can record with. Audio quality is most important to me though!

  • Ideally, I am aiming to get your recording by mid-to-late March so I have a little time to use my (rudimentary) video editing skills to put this all together. If you can, I prefer you send me the audio and the video as separate files. My email is andyjarema@gmail.com

  • This is NOT a paid opportunity. I actually have to pay $50 myself to enter the festival! At some point in the future I hope to get some grants to pay players to give this piece the full premiere it deserves, but at this point I can’t offer that. If that precludes you from doing this opportunity, I understand.

If you are passionate about the environment, this festival is an excellent way for you as an artist to express this. My particular piece Currents tells a strong narrative about the dangers of climate change, and you would be a part of sharing this message. I would be thrilled if you are interested!

Sheet Music (links below are clickable)

Oboe Solo: 1980 Heat Wave

Clarinet Solo: 1983 Freeze

Horn Solo: 1993 “Storm of the Century”

Flute Solo: 2011 Joplin Tornado

Percussion Solo: 2014 Detroit Flood

Trombone Solo: 2018 Paradise Wildfire

MIDI Recordings

NOTE! The piece uses the computer software Max/MSP to create live, interactive electronics to go with your acoustic solo piece. You can hear this happening with the MIDI recordings. It is NOT required that you play along with the software live since I can always extract the audio from your performance and run it through the system myself. However, using the interactive electronics might change the way you musically approach the piece, and it is also a hell of a lot of fun to experiment with (at least for me…). Max/MSP is free to download, and I would make the “patch” easy for you to use on your end if you were interested in setting it up. Let’s chat!
